In a world full of vampire delinquents who delight in terrorizing the night scene and feasting on the local flesh – be a vampire slayer who reads dorky comic books, wears wacky clothes, and enjoys evening bubble baths with his dog.
The bathtub scene where Sam (Corey Haim) sings along to “I Ain’t Got No Home” by Clarence Henry provides a comedic contrast to the darkness that is consuming Mike (Jason Patric) just downstairs. This jarring tonal shift between the jazzy tune and the raging hunger that drives Mike to nearly kill his brother in the bath adds this layer of campy humor, but also an intensity because it’s unclear what Mike might do. Will he be able to leash that desire for blood, or will Nanook have to unleash himself to protect Sam? The carefree nature that is attributed to Sam is juxtaposed against his validation-seeking brother, who has been bitten by teenage angst. He wanted to be one of the cool kids, wanted to win the girl with a taste for the bad boys. Well, the high always seems worth it until the comedown. So, maybe don’t go jumping off bridges in an effort to make some friends. Be the lonely boy in the bathtub who’s shamelessly self-content.
7/10 The Lost Boys feels like Top Gun (1986) only with motorcycles and fangs. Loved the uplifting 80s rock soundtrack, found it genuinely funny, and enjoyed the ride.
